Sustainability

We have developed sustainable products and processes that are contentious and responsible. Hear more about the Whirlpool Corporation commitment to sustainability.

Sustainability Has Always Mattered

Among appliance manufacturers, our focus on sustainability is unsurpassed. In 1970, Whirlpool Corporation became the first home appliance manufacturer to open an office of environmental control, and we have been leading the industry in sustainable initiatives ever since. Whirlpool Corporation led the creation of the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA), which helps to create industry-wide appliance efficiency standards. We also helped craft U.S. Federal Trade Commission Energy Labeling Rule, and we worked with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop the Green Lights Program, a precursor to the ENERGY STAR® program. Our sustainability strategy today engages nearly every aspect of our business, from materials and processes, to product technologies and end-of-life recycling, all aimed at a more sustainable future.

Our Appliances Tell the Story

With every product that we design and build, we're working to provide our building industry partners with sustainable choices for their customers.

Today, our refrigerators are an average 22 percent larger, cost 75 percent less to operate and can be purchased for 35 percent less than the refrigerators built when we first started our sustainability efforts in 1970 – all while using less energy than a 60-watt incandescent light bulb. All of our refrigerators and freezers also incorporate Honeywell’s Solstice® Liquid Blowing Agent (LBA)—a next generation insulation blowing agent that results in a 99.9 percent decrease in global warming potential. In the laundry room, we introduced the nation's first ENERGY STAR-rated clothes dryer, as well as a ventless clothes dryer – the Whirlpool® HybridCare™ Heat Pump Dryer –  the most efficient dryer ever to be introduced in the U.S. market that also expands laundry room design options.

By creating industry-leading products that perform better while significantly lowering operating costs and environmental impacts, we’re able to give our trade customers more choice, not compromises, for their customers. Learn more about the Whirlpool Corporation Commitment to Sustainability
